Abstract:The spread of classes across China in the recent years that focus on Confucius principles prescribing expectations and behavioral norms for women has once again brought Confucianism as classics into classrooms. However, in today's society where gender equality is a universal agreement, the re-emergence of Confucian teachings for women represents a backward retraction in time. This paper examines the historical production and domination of Confucian teachings for women. It argues that Confucian teachings for women were centered on man's primary and woman's secondary roles. The epistemology of Confucian teachings for women, which were largely based on the acceptance of the feudal patriarchy and its cultural authority, utilize imperative languages to establish gender-based segregation and strict behavioral norms, which restricting woman's development and maintaining gender hierarchy. It is hard for Confucian teachings for women to start the modernization transformation, due to their standpoint of knowledge. Without critical thinking, the rise of traditional culture will bring negative impact on woman's development and gender equality, even be the obstacle of Chinese modernization and development.
