Gender Relationships and Division of Labour in Rural Human Rites and Activities: Based on a Participatory Observation in a Funeral in the Northern Countryside of Anhui Province

Abstract:From the participation in a funeral in the countryside the author examines gender-based division of labour that existed in the ceremony and analyzes its representation of gender relationships and cultural implications. In both ceremonies and activities, gender division of labour is built on strictly men playing the primary role and women the secondary role. Through mystified sexual taboos, the male centered system of father and son inheritance is preserved keeping women completely outside of major events in the family. Gender division of labour is less strictly observed in informal ceremonies, although it is still confined by traditional customs and values. In all, gender division of labour is closely related to the patriarchal family structure in the countryside, whereby men are the focus of networks of interpersonal relationships within which women's relationships are embedded as secondary to men's.
