Abstract:For a long time, whether it is viewed by medicine, general culture or women themselves, menopause is believed to be the beginning of women's aging, even though there are different emphases and narrative of details. This paper examines from a gender perspective these three aspects to identify the process and the means by which the discourse of menopause is established. It uncovers how the underlying gendered notions influence the judgments and narratives of menopause, especially problematizing and demonizing menopausal experiences in popular culture. At the same time, this discourse also affects women's menopausal experience, and their own views of the experiences. The paper considers that menopause is a product of gendered cultural construct rather than a women's physiological phenomenon, indicating the intensification of stereotyping women's body in popular culture.
