Abstract：The contemporary write, Zhang Kangkang's novel, Sesame, is about the woman protagonist, Sesame, who migrated from the countryside to an urban area to work and pursued an experience with city life. The novel reveals a woman rural migrant's experience with class-based inequality and gender-based discrimination. It, however, fails to expose and interrogate the power relationships intersecting, at a foundational level, the systemic and structural class-based gender inequalities in urban as well as rural areas. This paper questions that the notion of rural-urban divide ultimately makes way for or even reinforces such discourses as 'population control' and 'quality' of individuals. Zhang's claim of 'women's perspective' and gender's lens have been covered by the ideology of modernity, as well as the discourse of development and its related strategy. In all, this paper proves that Zhang's claim does not question but reinforces the discourse centered on urbanization and marketization in the post-Mao Zedong era.
