Abstract This paper argues against the claim that the phenomenon of women's request for cesarean section because of being afraid of pain giving rise to high rate of cesarean section in the discourse of culture, technology, power, knowledge and medical systems. It is based on data collected by interviewing method and ten web blogs posted on the BBS of Yaolan website. Many clinicians and researchers have expressed that it is women who cannot bear the pain that leads to the increasing rate of cesarean section. They cite women's requests as the most important factor affecting the rising national rate of cesarean section. This study, however, argues that the "pain," firstly, is probably aggravated by unfriendly hospital environment and excessive medical intervention. Women may have asked for cesarean section out of anxiety. This paper, secondly, tries to present the body politics of women's experiences with birth deliveries in order to identify relationships between women's decision on cesarean section and attitudes of obstetricians as well as the ranking of hospitals.
