Abstract:In the mid of 1930s, the whole nation was encouraged to participate in the war of resistance against Japanese invasion. Women, as a half of the population, had the responsibility to participate in the resistance. Medical aid was considered as one of the most suitable undertakings for women during the war. In order to address the shortages of medical personnel during the war, the Nationalist government and women's organizations mobilized and organized female students, office clerks and housewives to attend medical aid training courses. Meanwhile, medical personnel including female doctors and nurses were targeted by the government to join battlefront hospitals. This paper attempts to analyze the discourse of mobilizing women to participate in the medical aid during the war, to review the design and practice of women in medical aid, in order to explore the complicated relationships between gender and the resistance war.
