Abstract Women's issues form a center focus of not only social work practices from a gender perspective but also the work of NGOs and International development Institutions. Such focus is a new challenge for social workers to adopt gender to analyze women's personal experiences as well as their diversity and complexity, and to achieve women's empowerment. This study examines the growth of three women group leaders, especially through discussion of their personal stories after the Sichuan earthquakes on May 12. While acknowledging concerns which these women have with respect to sexual relationships and gender roles, this study tries to illustrate how social workers could recognize their specific needs, and support their growth.
