Inquiry into of the Contemporary Style of Chinese Women's Participation in Politics: Policy Considerations |

Abstract Women's participation in politics primarily takes the forms of democratic participation through elections and participation based on rights and as a legitimate group. Focusing on women's participation as their legitimate right, this paper argue that every citizen should be guaranteed with rights to participate in public affairs and to develop skills in building and managing a peaceful and fair society. Women's political participation benefits not only women but also the entire society. Since the founding of the People's Republic, Chinese women's political participation has been through a transition from being led by the government to being under different influences of combined policies of promoting fair competition, proportional representation and competition as well as the electoral system. Through examining this transition, this article puts forward policy proposals to improve women's participation in politics.
