Abstract:The rule of retirement age in China allows a difference between 5 to 10 years in retirement age based on sex and status. The goal of achieving "Same retirement age between women and men," which has become a focus in the contemporary Chinese women's movement and the cause of human rights protection, has been a subject of debate among policy makers, academia and women themselves in the Chinese society. What have made people of different occupation, sex, and status choose to accept or reject "the same age retirement"? This paper discusses the findings of empirical research of those who are employed based on their sexes, social groups and different areas in order to identify complex factors that influence their choice of retirement age, including individual preference, family, work unit, economic and social perceptions. It also hopes to recommend solutions that are focused, differentiated and ordered to ending the compulsory requirement of gender-based differential retirement age.
