Abstract:Characteristic of the time, a system to honor people, including women, who were virtuous, was developed in the Han Dynasty. The system to honor women was motived by the dominating ideology of Confucianism, and a desire to control the public through the promotion of filial piety. Examining the history of the Han Dynasty, women's remarriage after the death of their husbands did exist. Women also resisted their husbands. These phenomena were prevalent though deviating from Confucius teaching. This deviation showed that dominant ideology of the government during the Han Dynasty had less influence on the lives of women.
