Abstract:The Government of Beijing in the early Nationalist Period developed the following relief action: firstly, to adopt legislation and policy to set servant girls free and secondly, to rescue abused servant girls. Although such action did not eradicate the indentured servitude tradition, it, at some level, changed the views of society towards servant girls and allowed some of them transform their lives.
