Abstract:German women have struggled for their political rights against intolerant political and cultural environment. During 100 years since the start of the First World War to the reunification, German women continued to fight for and obtained rights to political participation from the two World Wars, the Weimar Republic, through the Period of Nazi Dictatorship, to the 40 years of separation between the West and East Germany. After the reunification, the confederation system, mixed electoral system and multi-party system have all provided platforms for women to participate in politics. The German history suggests that women's political participation cannot be idealized as it has its own natural progression in congruence with the development of democracy, changes in women's self-awareness, and changes in the mode of social production. The further development of women's political rights depends on the development of the factors mentioned above.
