Abstract:The relationship between the daughter-in-law and the mother-in-law was one of the family relationships that were difficult to handle in traditional China. Status of daughter-in-law projected women's family status, while mother-in-law was an icon of ethics. The relationships of the daughter-in-law and the mother-in-law, in one aspect, encompassed women's family status. From the earlier to the later stages of Tang Dynasty, the relationships between daughter-in-law and mother-in-law had significant changes, reflecting women's family status. It was a result of the decline of aristocracy and the rise of the bureaucratic system.
