Abstract:The rural household structure is changing since the structural changes have taken place in China's countryside. The traditional family based on a patriarchal structure has come under attack as women have increased their status in nuclear family. Daughter's value as a means to her maternal family's wellbeing has also increased. This paper analyzes factors that influence the social acceptance of daughters providing for the aged in rural areas based on a survey conducted in Xun Wu County in Jiangxi Province. The results show that part of the rural residents think that daughters have the duty to provide for the aged and that they would accept support from daughters. Age, marital status, occupation and levels of education, family resources including the structure of children in the family and the number of daughters all have a significant influence on the social acceptance of daughters providing for the aged in rural areas.
