Abstract：Since the 1980s feminist ethicists engaged in a debate on the "ethics of justice as opposed to the ethics of care" and the concepts of "the self and the other". This paper examines the background, the origin, the focus and development tendencies of the debate and discusses the following three issues: how to redefine ethics, the self and the other. It suggests that the goals of the debate in feminist ethics are to challenge the core concepts of modernity, reshape the scope of analysis and transform the traditional paradigms of modern discourse, posing a dilemma to universalism represented by Habermas.
