Abstract:During the Nationalist period, women's body arts finally established its independent form in arts after ten years of debates in society. This helped, at some levels, draw clear boundaries between esthetics of women's body arts and morality and establish women's new body esthetics. While there was an emphasis on developing the body arts as a specialization, it also became an entertaining art form among artists themselves. As artists avoided or were unaware of sexual rights issues, they could not confront discrimination and demonization of women's bodies in traditional practices. They also failed to link body arts with rights and started female nude as a subject of crowd spectators in contemporary China. In the end, women were pressured to fall in the name of arts.
