Abstract:Moved by the mainstream culture women of different social standings also participated in the mass reading movement in the Han Dynasty. Women's reading in the Han dynasty had its own characteristics difference with men's. Despite the positive meaning that reading had for women, women's reading in the Han dynasty had its limitations. Women's reading in the Han dynasty did not go beyond the constraints of the mainstream culture that was still ruled by social norms hostile to women. Women's participation in reading did not help them rid the Confucian gender order of "men ruling the outside while women rule the inside of homes" and instead, intensified women's identity with the role of mother.
