Abstract:As a problem that has long challenged the Chinese society, trafficking in women has also attracted attention in literary and art circles. In March 2016, the winner of the Mao Dun Literary Prize, Jia Pingwa, published his new fiction Ji Hua. This fiction is based on a real event, a young woman named Hu Die, who was born in the country but longed for life in cities, was trafficked, then rescued, and finally went back on her own will to the village where she was previously sold. This paper adopts Ji Hua as the focus of research, exploring the future and the past of trafficked women who are vacillating between leaving and staying on with the family who bought her as revealed by the story that has mixed the real with imagination. Furthermore, comparing with other movies and TV plays on the same topic, this paper analyzes the author's representation of the contradiction between traditional ethics and modem rule of law, and the survival and predicament of trafficked women who have to face a choice between modern cities and declining villages, and between lived experience with gender-based violence and prejudice.
