Gender Analysis of Universities, Knowledge and Curriculum: Exemplified by Courses Targeting Women-Only at China's Elite Universities |

Abstract Abstract:While in recent years, post-secondary education has become popular and has increasingly pursued market-oriented utilitarian goals, many well-known universities have started different kinds of courses targeting women only, intending to combine traditional values with modern knowledge and the inculcation of fashion to create a women's ideal image. The existence of these courses, which clearly counteract the concept of gender equality, reflects, one the one hand, the interaction of universities, patriarchy, the commercial capital and conservatism in political culture, and on the other, the penetration of patriarchal values in campus cultures that are dissipating due, in part, to a growing crisis in the sense of purpose among universities. It is, thus, very important to adopt the framework of gender equality in an examination of university mandate, its system and curriculum in order to go beyond historical traditions and reconstruct Chinese universities on a path to be an important mechanism of promoting values and a social order based on gender equality.
