Abstract Women and health have gained attention in the research on social and cultural history of Chinese medicine. This paper examines and assesses the existing research on women and health from the following aspects, women's knowledge of reproductive health, Chinese history of obstetrics and gynecology, women's health practitioners and contemporary midwifery in the conflict of Chinese medicine and western medicine.
