Abstract Gender stereotypes are a type of cultural representations that are seldom recognized by people as cultural traps. The Chinese government has signed on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and should accordingly determine that gender stereotypes are covert gender-based discrimination. Recognizing the nature of gender stereotypes and the relationships between gender differences and individual differences should be an important component of the cause of promoting gender equality through cultural and institutional restructuring.
