Abstract This study examines the needs of elderly women, the present conditions of their demands for social support and the relationships between these two in Jiangsu based on the data from the third national survey on the social status of women. The results show that social support for elderly women is less than that for elderly men and that there are gaps between the needs of elderly women and the conditions of social support. Especially elderly women's economic situations are not better. Therefore the exchange between elderly women's social participation and informal social support is hidden under the guise of gender based divisions of labor in the predominately patriarchal society, in which elderly women's contributions are not valued and their needs of social support become silent.
