| The Identity and Status of Daughters in Marriages Built on Dual Surnames |

Abstract As a special form of marriage, marriage built on dual surnames modifies the traditional family arrangement. This paper discusses the changes of daughter's identity and status in this kind of marriage. On the one hand, the value of the only daughter to parents rises, and on the other hand, the changes in the daughter's value affect her life in her husband's family. That often means the improved relationship of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law's higher family status. The fundamental reason of these changes is that daughters are empowered by the marriage with dual surnames. They are given the rights to inherit the surnames and property, challenging the patriarchal family system.
